The big news in the auto industry this week has been Volvo’s announcement that all Volvo cars from 2019 and on will include an electric motor.

That’s not to say that Volvo is completely tossing out the internal combustion engine. But all new-for-2019 and later model Volvos will at least be hybrids, if not fully electric.

We’re all used to Volvo leading the way. The world’s first 3-point safety belt, rear-facing child seat, inflatable curtain, and more have come from Volvo headquarters. The brand that became synonymous with safety is now blazing the trail for other mainstream automakers into a world of environmental responsibility.

This announcement comes right on the heels of the news that Polestar is shedding the Volvo logo. After years of partnership, Volvo acquired Polestar in 2015 to become the high-performance side of Volvo. Now its own brand- but still in the Volvo Cars family- Polestar is focused on an electrified lineup of performance vehicles.

Technology in the electric sector of the auto industry is rapidly improving. Demand is growing, and we predict an even more significant market shift toward electricity in the coming years. Volvo is certainly leading the charge, and we can’t wait to drive a 2019 Volvo.
