Volvo's first pure electric vehicle (EV), the Volvo XC40 Recharge, has arrived at Mitchell Volvo Cars of Simsbury. We are excited to debut an incredibly capable compact SUV that is very much like its gas-powered version, the Volvo XC40. As far as style and comfort, there aren't very many differences. One thing you are sure to notice is how whisper-quiet the ride experience. There is no engine sound, and the hum of the tires on the roads around Harford is mostly blocked out by the quiet cabin interior.
The electric motors produce up to 402-horsepower compared to the gas-powered Volvo XC40 that puts out 248-horsepower. That is mighty impressive. The days of trading power for efficiency are quite literally over. Not only is fast charging in public spaces becoming more accessible with at least a dozen charging stations between Simsbury, Farmington, and West Hartford. However, with a driving range of over 200-miles, you may only need to charge the Volvo XC40 Recharge overnight through a regular plug-in at your house.
Charging the Volvo XC40 Recharge
The Volvo XC40 Recharge comes with the supplied Level 1 and Level 2 charger. You can plug the charger into a regular wall outlet in your house, which typically provides the Level 1 charge. You can still use fast-charging stations with the same charger, which can also do Level 2 fast-charging. You can also upgrade to a fast-charging station in your home with professional installation. With over 200-miles of range, most drivers find that overnight is more than sufficient to cover your commute and errands during the day.
Plug-in Hybrid vs. EV
Volvo offers plug-in hybrid vehicles like the Volvo XC90 Recharge and Volvo S60 Recharge. There are more plug-in hybrid versions in the line-up, and the goal is for Volvo to offer a plug-in hybrid or all-electric version of each model and phase out gas engines completely by 2030. So, what's the difference between plug-in hybrid and all-electric? Both have to be charged with the included cable, but the plug-in hybrid still has a gas engine along with the electric motor. A plug-in hybrid offers more flexibility, especially if you enjoy long road trips, and the combined power of electric and gas engines often provides a lot more power and capability. This will become less of a factor as the all-electric engine become even more powerful, eventually surpassing what a combustible engine can offer and making zero-emissions even more or a reality.
If you opt for a plug-in hybrid, you can still optimize the engine to work off the electric engine as much as possible. However, the all-electric range is only around 30-miles. That might be enough to cover your commute so you can reserve gas for long drives, but it's still a great way to reduce fuel consumption and benefit from the powerful hybrid engine.

The Volvo XC40 recharge is available in one configuration and trim level. This simplifies things, and you can expect that the all-electric vehicle is appointed with all the luxury features you would expect from Volvo. Volvo designed the interior with renewability in mind. The luxury trim includes simulated Nubuck leather and floor mats made from recycled plastic. Inside, you will find the same minimalist Scandinavian interior that is comfortable, inviting, and serenely quiet. You'll find that the Volvo XC40 Recharge interior compares evenly with its gas version.
